sponge care

Sponges can be delicate so great care should be taken when cleaning and using them. If cared for properly, sponges can last up to 3-6 months or more.

Directions:

1. Use a natural chemical-free soap or soak for 5-10 minutes in a cup of warm water with one of the following:

  • 2-3 drops tea tree oil
  • 1 tbsp vinegar
  • 1 tbsp baking soda (helps restore volume and density)
  • 1 tsp hydrogen peroxide (helps eliminate discoloration)

2. Rinse sponge and squeeze out excess water

Do not boil your sponge! Boiling shrinks and toughens sea sponges. Do not use harsh soaps or chemicals! Do not soak your sponges longer than the recommended time as it could cause the sponge to deteriorate faster.

How often should sponges be cleaned?

Sea Pearls can be rinsed and reused multiple times and do not need to be sanitized after each use.  We recommend that you clean your sponge:

  • Prior to use for the first time
  • Once daily or every other day
  • If the sponge develops an unpleasant odor
  • Prior to storing

Sponges should be completely dry before storage!

How to trim a sponge:

  • Sponges are easiest to trim when dry but can also be carefully trimmed when wet
  • Do not cut the sponge in half as Sea Pearls are trimmed to a specific shape
  • With scissors, trim around the perimeter of the sponge, a little at a time until you reach the desired size.

If the surface of your sponge starts to become ragged, do not rip or tear the sponge.  Instead, trim the loose pieces off with scissors until the surface is smooth.  This will extend the lifetime of your sponge.

About Sea Sponges

What exactly are they?

Sea sponges are plant-like organisms that grow in colonies in the ocean.  They are the simplest multi-cellular creatures in the animal kingdom.

What makes them sustainable?

Sea sponges are a naturally renewable resource as they have the ability to regenerate from fragments left from the original sponge. When sponges are harvested, divers cut them so the base of the sponge remains intact. This ensures that the sponge has the ability to regenerate and regrow so it can be harvested again and again. Sea sponges also reproduce during the harvesting process by releasing millions of egg and sperm cells into the surrounding waters. Due to the filtration function of a sea sponge, sponge colonies are not able to thrive in polluted waters.

How are sea sponges harvested?

Sponges are harvested by hand-cutting the sponge or by hooking. Cutting the sponge and leaving the base intact is the best and most commonly used method as it encourages a speedier regrowth. To prevent excessive harvesting in one sponge bed, all sponges harvested must have a minimum diameter of 5 inches. Sponge harvesting is also strictly prohibited in protected marine sanctuaries and coral reefs.

    Sea Pearls

Posted by RC on 23rd Aug 2023

I have been using sea pearls for over 10 years and find them to be the best holistic choice for monthly care.

    Love these!

Posted by Stacy S. on 19th Mar 2023

I have been using sea pearls for 11+ years from jade &pearl. I’ve tried going back to disposable items, and they just don’t work as well. In all these years using them, I don’t think anything has ever leaked! I’m learning tricks for when out and about and I think I’ve got it figured out. No going back!

    Sea sponge

Posted by Jen on 9th Apr 2021

I have been a sponge connoisseur for about 3 years now. they were actually recommended by a professional geographer for the southern region of my “United States”. My southern area had too many little people that were too large for their age. Unfortunately it caused one of my states to collapse -leaving only these sea pearls to help support the poor state. Luckily these little and big sea pearls are just what the state needed. Shark week is so much easier with sea sponges as well. The boat has never sprung a single leak with the sea sponge on board and the captain is much less crampy and that is always a plus. Thank you so much the captains and states appreciate you.

I'm blow away with how these have increased my quality of life! I wish I didn't have to be vague... Let's just say... no more interrupted sleep, sudden spills and no cramping! I'm SO grateful!

    Fantastic!

Posted by Erin S on 20th Jul 2018

I've used these for years. They last a while with a crop of sponges ready to go; and when they are falling apart, compost! Love them and I tell everyone I know to give them a try!

    Happy

Posted by EGM on 12th Jun 2018

Works better than any previous device. Easy to use, comfortable. Small learning curve for removal. I have found that plain hand soap is the best cleaner...the sea sponge lasts longer, stays fresher. Easy to trim to size. By far, the best option there is.

if you don't know what we're talking about...

Posted by Chadell on 6th Mar 2018

I encourage every woman out there to try these. Google them, research them. Some of the stories I found, I believe, were written to dissuade women from using sponges. However, I believe Jade and Pearl's sponges are high quality and perhaps the ones that some have encountered were not. I never have liked those ugly green and yellow sponges

The Large is LARGE, but they're high quality

Posted by Unknown on 21st Feb 2018

The large sized sponges are as large as my palm (I am a woman with small hands) and are slightly larger than what I intended to use them for, but after trimming them down with some scissors they're ready to go.

    Game changer!

Posted by Emmeline on 5th Feb 2017

I switched to using these sponges about a year ago and have never looked back. It's comfortable, it works, and other than the initial packaging it is zero-waste! The only potential downside is that it is not for the squeamish -- but I personally have no issue with it :) Thank you for keeping this on the market!
