What herbs are in this tincture and what do they do?
Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica)
A nervine tonic- this herb improves circulation and is helpful for skin disorders. Recent research indicates that Gotu Kola has an effect on connective tissue and healing. It enhances blood flow, increases the tone of the connective tissue surrounding the veins and keeps the veins supple. It controls inflammation and reduces the accumulation of fluids. Gotu Kola has a calming effect on the body and is chiefly used to support the central nervous system. A longevity herb and brain food, it rebuilds the energy reserves, and is useful after a nervous breakdown or to help prevent a nervous breakdown. It promotes relaxation and enhances memory. Gotu Kola is anti-inflammatory and assists in lessening the pain and discomfort associated with pelvic organ prolapse. It relieves fatigue and stimulates the adrenal glands.

Dong Quai (Angelica sinensis)
Dong Quai is one of the most popular plants in Chinese medicine and is used primarily for health conditions in women. Dong Quai has been called “female ginseng” based on its use for gynecological disorders such as painful menstruation or pelvic pain, recovery from child birth or illness and fatigue/low vitality. It is also used for strengthening the blood for cardiovascular conditions, high blood pressure, inflammation, uterine prolapse, headaches, infection and nerve pain. Dong Quai is most often used in combination with other herbs and is thought to return the body to proper order by nourishing the blood and harmonizing vital energy. The name Dong Quai translates as “return to order”.

Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus)
Astragalus is used in Chinese medicine to invigorate qi and to activate yang for relief from prolapse of stomach, uterus, or rectum. A prolapse indicates muscular weakness. The muscles are ruled by the spleen qi, becoming weaker with reduced qi. Astragalus is a spleen qi tonic. A prolapse represents a falling of an organ from tis place. The upward flow of qi is promoted by herbs that invigorate qi and yang, hence astragalus is appropriate in that its “direction” of action is upward against the fall of the organ. Since a prolapse often produces a heavy sensation and fullness or swelling where the organ has moved, the syndrome is like one of moisture accumulation. Herbs that remove dampness, such as astragalus may help.

Red Raspberry Leaves (Rubus idaeus)
Red Raspberry is the best known, most widely used and softest of all uterine and pregnancy tonic herbs. It contains frogrine, an alkaloid which gives tone to the muscles of the pelvic region, including the uterus itself. Most of the benefits of Raspberry Leaf are traced to the nourishing source of vitamins and minerals found in this plant and to the strengthening powerful fragrance. Of special note are the rich concentrations of vitamin C, the presence of Vitamin E and the easily assimilated calcium and iron. Raspberry leaves also contain vitamins A and B complex and many minerals, including phosphorous and potassium. The leaves are described as astringent in use and can be effective in soothing inflammation and constricting the tissues of the intestine to prevent water loss.

Ginseng (Panax ginseng)
Ginseng is arguably the best known and one of the most extensively prescribed herbs in Chinese medicine, used as a general adaptogenic and restorative tonic for just about any problem. Ginseng and Astragalus work together and are classified as chi tonics. According to traditional Chinese medical theory, they work primarily on the major organs that increase energy: the lungs that derive energy directly from the air, the heart that is the seat of divine consciousness, the spleen-stomach that derives energy from food and drink, and the kidney-adrenals that house the root or ancestral energy. If the body is weak it functions poorly, resulting in sluggishness, lack of motivation, prolapse of the organs, spontaneous sweating, chronic diarrhea and related symptoms. Spleen-stomach weakness can lead to pelvic organ prolapse. Chi tonics treat these organ weaknesses but particularly those of the spleen and lungs. Ginseng treats all deficiency diseases, strengthens the lungs, nourishes body fluids, counteracts thirst and calms the spirit. It may be used for shock, collapse, lung deficiency chronic disease and heart weakness. Ginseng also increases wisdom, promotes longevity and increases resistance to disease.

Saw Palmetto (Sabal semulata)
Saw Palmetto is a general nutritive tonic and soothes the male and female sexual organs. It is used primarily in the treatment of balance problems and is known for its ability to restore the body’s vital energies. It is mainly used as a potent remedy for male prostate complications but is also valued for its ability to assist the thyroid by actualizing the function of the female reproductive organs and sex glands. Due to its positive effects on glandular systems Saw Palmetto is recommended in the treatment of many types of wasting diseases and is also used to soothe nervous disorders. Other traditional female uses include treatment for: breast enlargement, bladder and uterine prolapse, frigidity, hormone regulation, sexual stimulation, urinary tract infection, hair regrowth and weight gain.

Lady’s Mantle (Alchemilla Vulgaris)
Lady’s Mantle is a member of the rose family. Besides being useful in reducing heavy menses and aiding a woman with a prolapsed uterus, it helps to strengthen the uterine tissue by removing excess dampness and inflammation. It is an excellent herb to promote conception and to use after birth as a uterine and abdominal tonic. Use of Lady’s Mantle combined with Red Raspberry Leaf and Astragalus may be used in tincture or tea as a prolapse preventative. This herb has a gentle harmonizing influence on the menstrual cycle and can be used from puberty through menopause. British herbalist, Elizabeth Brooke, author of Herbal Therapy for Women, suggests using Lady’s Mantle when there has been a trauma to the uterus from a miscarriage, abortion, pelvic inflammatory disease, surgery of any kind, or use of an IUD.
